.. - U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Kirt Finnell, an engineer with 20th Special Forces Group, smiles at the instructors after zeroing his weapon before the biathlon, Aug. 6, 2024, at the 2024 National Best Warrior Competition on Camp Ethan Allen Training Site in Jericho, Vermont. The Best Warrior Competition is a physically and mentally challenging five-day event that tests soldiers on a variety of technical and tactical skills. Winners are named the Army National Guard’s Soldier and Noncommissioned Officer Best Warrior of the Year and move on to compete in the Department of the Army’s Best Squad Competition, with other soldiers from nationals filling out the ranks of their squad. Lisa Arnett, a CH-47 Chinook crew chief with the ALNG’s B Co. 1-169th Aviation Regiment, talks about her life, career, and motivations at Sumpter Smith Joint National Guard Base in Birmingham, Alabama, Feb. 8, 2022. Arnett’s childhood of trauma and abuse in the foster care system led her to service in the Alabama National Guard, which turned her story into a positive force of change for others like her.
