Our nation's symbol since 1782, this Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) was seen on FM-ARNGTC's Pelham Range on Friday, 5 February, 2021.  Although no longer listed as an Endangered Species, it is still afforded special protection under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. This species takes 4-5 years to mature and develop its white head and tail. Wingspan is up to 7.5 feet. Mainly observed around water eating fish and carrion, Bald Eagles are monogamous meaning they mate for life. Bald eagle nests are generally 4-5 feet wide and 2-4 feet deep, although the nesting pair will add nesting material to the nest every year. Some can reach 10 feet across and weigh a thousand pounds.  This is the 181st documented bird species on the training center, a testament to the high quality habitat available on the range to a wide diversity of avian species.
